Sasha Grey: From Porn To Playstation
For all aspiring young people in their early 20’s the notion of a career crossroads will be the term that they hear, see and think about every minute of their lives. It is often a scary proposition to have that voice in the back of your head constantly screaming; “ok, ok enough messing about time to sort yourself out and get settled!” For some, that voice will haunt them for the rest of their lives, for others it will never appear at all but a very lucky few will listen to it at just the right time, forge a respectable career and feel fulfilled in their lives. Former adult film actress Sasha Grey is certainly no exception to this rule and to say that the 23 year old is at a career crossroads might just be the understatement of the century. Having boldly decided to turn her back on the porn industry last year after some 200 films, Ms. Grey has found herself in demand from those who, cynics might say, are looking to exploit her name and reputation to appeal to a certain market. That may be so, but I think one must play Devil’s advocate here for the sake of a tiny bit of fairness. Sasha Grey has always come across as an intelligent and affable person in interviews, not ashamed of her past and eager, it seems to me, to be known for something other than her sexual talents. An avid user of myspace, twitter and other social media, Ms. Grey has made no secret of her love for art, music and film and even posted some of her own music for fans to listen to. Recently she has scored roles as herself in several high profile music videos as well as hit U.S. series “Entourage.” Acclaimed director Steven Soderberg even utilized her in a recent movie which prompted Empire magazine to quip: “I’m sure this won’t be many viewers favourite movie of hers.” Some would contend that having such judgements placed upon you is the trade off and a fair price to pay for having spent so much time in and around the porn industry. Whether it is fair or not ceases to matter because judgements like this will come along regardless, the jokes are just too easy after all. Sasha Grey is just going to have to battle through these preconceptions and prove her doubters wrong or else choose to live on her name and reputation forever.
In 2011 Ms Grey landed a role in the game Saints Row: The Third lending her voice to the villain
turned good guy Viola DeWynter. The character is bolshie, quick witted and not afraid to stand up for herself. Her character quips: “I didn’t get a Masters in economics for this y’know?”Ok ok, so the game will not win any prizes for subtlety or ever be classed as “art” and is certainly a game that panders to adolescent male fantasy at nearly every turn. Sleaze, debauchery and violence are par for the course in Saints Row: The Third and even a mission where you find yourself running around a casino blasting bad guys while Sasha’s character is dressed as a slutty nun, but I digress. I’m sure having Sasha Grey’s name attached must have felt like a godsend to a franchise eager to appeal to adolescent boys but, that aside, her voice acting is actually pretty good. Her timing is good; she conveys emotions well and certainly doesn’t sound like a fish out of water amongst the other voice actors. I certainly haven’t ever heard of anybody making the successful transition from adult film actress to serious actress before but it seems like Sasha Grey is willing to make a good fist of it! (Oh Dear!) See, too easy!!!
